Kathleen Varga-Conrad (August 2017)
My husband, daughter, and I, along with our two German Shepherds, just returned from a short but wonderful stay at Barrier Dunes 7. This was our second time renting from Wendy at Cape Escape, and we hope to do so many more times!
Back home in KY safe and sound, but missing the sound of the sea and the smell of the salt air already! Had business not called, we would have loved to stay longer and just zoned out next to the sea.
House was in great shape when we arrived and we tried to leave it as we found it. I know how difficult it is to maintain a seaside home, and how much work it takes to keep the elements from causing deterioration and damage. That’s probably why we appreciated the condition and cleanliness of the place.
For future guests, I would recommend a morning walk by the sea, followed by donuts at the ‘Trading Post’ just down the street. Swim in the sea before noon, read or nap on the lanai until 5, then, at least twice, treat yourself to oysters or steamed shrimp at Indian Pass Raw Bar ten minutes down the street (they’ve got hamburgers and gumbo, too). It’s one of the most authentic and excellent old Florida eateries in the State, and I’ve been from Destin to Jacksonville to Key West and never had oysters as good, except occaionally in New Orleans at three times the price!
The Sunset Grille in Port St. Joe is also good for a quieter dinner. They have great scallops and swordfish as well, plus a full bar if gin-and-tonic or martinis are your fancy.
Cell phones seem to work at the Trading Post area and sometimes on the beach…..sort off nice to be away from the ring tone for a while. Internet wi-fi is fine in the unit as is cable TV, so you never feel totally isolated despite being able to see a thousand stars at night over the beach and sea without hotel, traffic or city lights washing them out. It’s very much like standing on the Gulf shore of Florida in the ’60s before everyone else found out how squeaky, white and fine the sand was on the Gulf.
Again, Wendy, thanks for the experience and providing such a nice beach-front unit. Hope to see you next winter…..
Good memories, Graham & Carol

Thank you for a wonderful mini vacation! Loved our condo right on the beach. Beautiful sunsets, beautiful white sand and wonderful accommodations. It was so nice to be somewhere where dogs are loved. All the the shops in Apalachicola and Port St Joe were quaint and were dog friendly. I will definitely be back!
Roger Harelson (July 2016)
We made this year an extended family vacation. My sister-in-law, her grown children, spouses, and grandchildren were in BD8 next door. We had a great time on the beach, in the pool and on our decks with the best view of the ocean you could ask for. Our children met some of their cousins that were in the area at the Indian Pass Raw Bar and all were impressed with the atmosphere and quality of the food. My wife, sister-in-law and I ate a Triple Tails between the Cape and Port St. Joe and would highly recommend it as a quaint local place to eat (excellent food). Having traveled all over while in the military I can honestly say there are no prettier beaches in the world than the panhandle of Florida and Cape San Blas is the greatest hidden secret of the Florida coast. If you are looking for the ideal place Tropical Breeze (BD7) is it.
Ruth Green (April 20106)
We have recently returned from a wonderful few days at beautiful Cape San Blas. We were in Barrier Dunes 7 Tropical Breeze which was lovely and quite comfortable. It was beautifully appointed and stocked with everything you might need for a great trip from pet towels to beach chairs.
Barrier Dunes is beautifully landscaped, quiet and pet stations were readily available. We enjoyed the beach and watching the breathtaking sunsets directly in front of our condo and seeing dazzling stars at night. This is definitely a redo trip!
I cannot say enough good about the management. The communication with Wendy was always prompt and filled with suggestions and any information we needed. Many thanks to her! They even found a necklace my daughter had forgotten and it’s in the mail to us. Awesome! This is certainly a trip to repeat and we hope to return soon.
Tom Lewis (Dec/Jan. 2016)
Your place in cape San Blas is perfect. The views are great (all 3 decks…especially the top floor’s view). The kitchen was well-stocked with all the utensils. We cooked in every night so we would knowJ.
This part of the cape is quiet and beautiful. We love the fact that our younger kids can play or bike ride in the community safely. And, thank you for your attention to detail, even calling us on the way down to let us know about some potential delays on the road due to some area flooding. That was above and beyond.
Have a great 2016. We’ll be back.
Anne Astengo (October 2015)
Thanks again, Wendy. The time at the cape was most enjoyable.
Carol Sheehy (August 2015)
There it was. Right in front of me…….. first thing in the morning. The ocean, the beach, with my dogs right beside me. What could be better? A few steps and there we were in the most amazing surf and sand. You couldn’t ask for a better picture.
My time in Cape San Blas at Barrier Dunes gave me what I’ve dreamed of…a perfect beach vacation and Tropical Paradise made it even better. The view from the unit was incredible….days first light through sunset. I could write a book about the sunsets. Can’t wait till next year. One more thing, the customer service was amazing.
The Littleton Family (July 2015)
We really enjoyed our stay, the house & beach. Weather was perfect & grandkids had fun in the water. What a great getaway.
The Beck Family (June 2015)
We did have a blast! We didn’t do a whole lot besides swim, fish and eat, but that was just what we were looking for. Most nights we went into Port St. Joe to eat. We thought the food tat the marina was the best. The last night we went to Apalachicola and ate at Caroline’s on the River. That was EXCELLENT and we’d totally recommend it to anyone. It really doesn’t take long to get there. All in all a relaxing experience!
The Holtz Family (March 2015)
Our stay was perfect, we would not have changed a thing! We are just in the thinking phase for next March, but wanted to know the process for reserving the same rental early. Thank you again for everything. The home was immaculate & had everything we needed to make our trip perfect. The weather cooperated for us and it was a sunny, warm 75+ all week. The best part for us was we were right on the beach & could go out any of the decks & watch the water & dolphins.
The Stelmacks (March 2015)
We had an awesome time. Barrier Dunes, in particular and Cape San Blas, in general, are both amazing!
VIsited Apalachicola–so very quaint! Oysterbones Pet Shop, Soda Fountain (yummy ice cream) and Tamara’s Restaurant were all great.
However, nothing beats the walks on the beach with our dog, Bart, and sitting on the deck seeking dolphins, sunsets and constellations. Hubby enjoyed fishing and even caught a teeny fish!
Hope to come back.
The NewBerg’s, February 2014
We had a great time at Cape San Blas. The weather could not have been better. I haven’t downloaded my pictures yet (taxes to do) but rest assured the home was in great condition and we really had a good time.
Peg and Jim Hamilton (February 2014)
Thanks for sharing your home with us. We had a lovely time.
John Borek (March 2013)
We had a great trip! The beach was fantastic and the house served all our needs. Exactly what we hoped for– Barkley rates the rental unit a 10 out of a possible 10.
Jackie Dluzeski (Jan/Feb 2013)
Wendy we had such a marvelous time at your home. If it wouldn’t have gotten chilly the last couple days we probably wouldn’t have ever left the place after going into Apalachicola Monday for groceries. We ended up going horse back riding with Cheryl @ Twobit Stables on Friday. She is a lovely woman and her horses are so sweet. I have attached some pictures. Jim and his staff at the Indian Pass Oyster Bar treated Mary Jo and I like family.
Thanks again for your lovely accommodations.
Ron and Sharon Cook, May 2011 (Repeat Guests)
We are back home and already missing the Cape!! It is absolutely wonderful!! Yes, Tater (our dog) remembered the beach–he got so excited when he started smelling the salt air. He had so much more energy and loved running on the beach and in the surf. I think we have made Coco (our 2nd dog) into a little beach bunny too. She really took to it. We didn’t know how she would do because she wasn’t impressed with teh beach in South Caroline, but I think she just needed to go to the Cape to appreciate a beautiful Gulf Coast beach! She loved chasing the birds!
Tropical Breeze (Barrier Dunes 7) was wonderful — we definitely will request this rental again. It was so great being right on the beach…siding on the deck, relaxing and listing to the surf rolling…..just HEAVEN! The view was spectacular!
Again, thanks for allowing us to enjoy Tropical Breeze! We loved it!
Emily Adams, March 2011
You weren’t kidding about the Cape—what a beautiful hidden gem!! We absolutely loved it and would love to come back! Tropical Breeze was a splurge for us, but it was worth it as we just adored being right on the water—nothing like going ot sleep and waking up to the sound of the surf. Tropical Breeze was beautiful and we would certainly love to stay there again! As you can see from teh pictures, the four of us (with baby) had a blast!!! Thanks so much for everything!
Leslie Schwab, January 2011
I cannot express how much we loved our 2 weeks in Florida. It was sooooo relaxing and beautiful. Your place was so clean and nicely decorated, I didn’t want to go home. Ihave never seen the dogs having so much fun as they had on the beach. I wish we could have stayed longer but Barry had to get back to his work and I had to get back to taking care of my parents. I can’t believe how fast 2 weeks went. We loved it so much and we would like to go back next year. Thank you so much for everything you did to make this grip great. I will be talking to you!
Barry and Jean Gross, December 2010
I can’t tell you when I’ve had such a nice vacation. The condo was great and we pretty much had teh beach to ourselves. We will be back again.
Carol Gasior, November 2010
We returned to a cloudy, rainy, cold Chattanooga–but with great memories of sun and sand an waves! we were all very impressed by Tropical Breeze and I think we want to return next year. As soon as we can pick some dates I will be in touch to make reservations! Thanks for all your help and for making the whole process go so smoothly. I did get to the beach some, but also enjoyed the pools and went to Port St. Joe and Apalachicola and do some exploring. We managed to eat our way through 3 bushels of lysters, plus shrimp and fish and crab, so you can imagine we spent a lot of time cooking and eating!
Maureen & Barry, October 2010
We are back safely and finding the rain a shock after the gorgeous weather and that beautiful beach. Kuma (their dog) had a wonderful time! He was a little unsure about the waves hitting him, but he wanted to be on that beach constantly. What a great location for the condo. I could not have imagined a better view sitting on the deck morning, afternoon and evening. The sunsets were awesome. Just beautiful. I hope we can get back for a long stay next time!
Kevin Kelly, October 2010
It was perfect. Thank you so much. We will recommend it to our friends and be back as soon as possible!
Deborah Migues, September 2010
We did enjoy our trip and we definitely plan to return. It was so nice not having to deal with the crowds! Thank you so much and we will be in touch soon!
Amy Downing, August 2010 (repeat guests)
It was exactly what we needed, we love it there. Thanks for accommodating us so quickly. We will definitely go back for longer next time.
Emma Hopson, July 2010
I cannot begin to tell you how much we enjoyed the Cape and the condo. All of us want to return!
Where to begin…..
The condo is extremely beautiful. I was so pleased to have our friends join us. They were so impressed by everything in the condo and the comfort. The owners need to know what an exquisitely decorated condo it is. The areas are so clearly defined, but yet open. The choices, including the paintings are divine. My husband, who never says anything about decor, commented on the beauty! The choices in fabric, counter-tops, colors and event eh comfort of the furniture is magnificent. We loved the table and mirror in the living room. The painting at the bottom of the steps was so cute.
The beach is beyond belief. The wildlife (frogs, turtles, crabs, raccoons, birds, fish deer..) just so awesome. The privilege of riding a horse on the beach at sunset was a reverent experience. The fire-pits on the beach were too cool too. The tone of the beach with families and no commercialism is significant. It is becoming impossible to find such a place. We went 1 day at Destin to shop and could not wait to get back to the condo and beach. We loved the quaintness and serenity.
I loved seeing the dogs running in the morning. I also loved that we got to pet them. Folks were so friendly and kind. The sea oats and sand are breathtaking. I am so taken aback by the scenery.
We cooked so many wonderful meals & laughed at so many funny stories. The time was relaxing and calming to the spirit. I am so thankful for the time spent there and we will plan to return. Thank you for everything!
Audrey Cooper and Family, June 2010
We had a wonderful time this past week. The home was very comfortable. The beach was great and the pool soooooo warm. Thank you for everything. We look forward to staying here again in the future!
We really enjoyed our time—man and beast alike :). Now back to reality :-(!
Teresa F., March 2010
We got here today and the place is great! The babies love the beach and people are sooooo friendly with their dogs. The house is beautiful and it is a very welcoming atmosphere. Thanks again for all your help!
Cathy Highland, Feb/March 2010
I just wanted to let you know that we had a great time. The place was beautiful and very well maintained. We really enjoyed the solitude on the beach. It was great to let our dogs play in the water and on the beach without worrying about disturbing others….e enjoyed riding the horses with the outfit you recommended. All in all it was a great, relaxing vacation and we hope to see you again next year.
Jennifer Dow, January 2010
We did have a great time at the Cape and did some much needed R & R. It’s beautiful down there. We enjoyed a horseback ride on the beach. It was nice to sleep in every morning and nap a few times in the afternoon. Loved getting up in the morning and having our coffee outside on the deck and looking out over the gulf. Thanks gaain for a much needed vacation!
Kelly Shepard, December 2009/January 2010 (Repeat Guests)
It was the best time we EVER had yet! It was so great to hear the ocean all the time. This was the first time we didn’t see any dolphins. The weather was awesome, but we did notice there weren’t as many people there this year. It was awesome!
Jan Mitcham, August 2009 (Repeat Guests)
What an awesome time we had!!! The children and dogs had an absolute ball! The Golden thought he had died and gone to heaven…so funny at first…watching those waves coming in and going out and having to bark at them a lot before he leapt and stayed in the water! My kids LOVED the place. They thought it was unbelievable getting to have their own room and bath. They felt like they had their own haven.
We needed this trip and THIS beach. SO relaxing, so unspoiled and once again, the friendliest people I’ve ever met everywhere you go!
We got to go to the Indian Pass Raw Bar and just loved it. Ate soooo much of the best seafood we had ever had. We just can’t wait to go back. Also had some of the best Mexican food we ever had at Pepper’s (Port St. Joe). I took them to the Dockside Cafe for lunch as they were heading out on Sunday and they thoroughly enjoyed that too. We had the dogs with us and they sat us outside, dogs and all.
It was a dream come true for us to get to vacation with our dogs. I don’t think there is a place more like Paradise than the Cape, especially with you and Donna tending the nests there. You really go all out to make us feel pampered and that is felt immediately. My son (who loves to cook!) couldn’t believe what a well stocked kitchen it was. And my daughter loved the decor. It was a huge hit all the way around. We plan to do this every year!
Again, my hat is off to you and your attention to excellence. Thanks for EVERYTHING!
David Floyd, August 2009
WOW! What an awesome time & a GREAT house. We had the best time & I can’t wait to get back to the Cape! Our first visit there & it won’t be our last. We had everything we needed & more there…it was a truly a relaxing vacation.
I look forward to coming back & enjoying your place again.
Bobbie Cotton, July 2009 (Kansas City, MO)!
We absolutely loved it! We drove straight through from Kansas City — took us 19 hours including stops.
I treated the place as if it were mine. It is so beautiful. We do want to come back!! I really like the shower on the porch. I am surprised that all the units don’t have this feature.
Laura Carswell, May 2009
We are back and unpacked…regrettably. We had a great time and my in-laws loved it. Dwayne, with “Book Me a Charter” had us as guests for 2 trips! He is great and I would highly refer him to anyone. He worked very hard with us and it was greatly appreciated. We will use him again.
Dana McGowan, March 2009
Our trip to Cape San Blas & Barrier Dunes was unbelievable!!! We had the most amazing time and we couldn’t have asked for better weather. It was in the mid to upper 70’s the entire time, not a cloud in the sky or a drop of rain for the duration of the stay. It was so secluded & made for the most relaxing trip we have ever taken.
The rooms were AMAZING. I t was very comfortable, had everything we needed and made for a nice home away from home. The family dog enjoyed his stay too and being able to take him to the beach was soooooo fun. He made may friends! We will definitely be recommending this place to other family members & friends & will be back for sure. I hate that our trip is already over & having such a wonderful time and a nice place to stay made it very hard to come back to reality. Thank you for everything!!!!
Bob & Lynn Parker, Ashville, NC. February 2009
We treated the condo as if it were our own…& we wish it were!! ……We arrived home last night, happy, tired & safe. Brrrr it’s cold in Ashville & we miss the beach! Next year we will stay longer ….
We ADORED Tropical Breeze…the amazing beach…the entire experience. Everything was perfect for our arrival. We eventually noticed a burned out deck light & Donna took care of that as soon as we called her. In fact, Donna was just the best!) (NOTE from Wendy: Donna is my lead person down at the Cape! You will get her number with you check in directions & I have to agree, she does ROCK!) She was available whenever we needed her (thankfully, not often!) and even hand-delivered a phone card to us! We totally fell in love with her sense of humor…….
The entire Barrier Dunes development is exceptional. Thh grounds are perfectly maintained and the building exteriors were in great condition. The entire place looks crisp and cared for. Although far removed from the “beach house chick” airiness that I prefer, Barrier Dunes 7 was beautifully decorated and far lovelier than the photos portray on the website. The Ultrasuede sofas and chairs are perfectly suited to beach living. The master suite was total luxury, the bead was as delightfully comfortable as our own and I truly appreciated the granite countertops!
This was our dogs’ first trip to the ocean; in fact, it was our poodles’ first experience around water of any sort other than baths and they had the time of their young lives!! Barney’s (10 mos) initial fear of the surf turned into a passion for chasing the sea foam. Sacha (4 mos) quickly discovered digging in the sand was the greatest of all past times, then she found a giant hold that someone had dug and was in Heaven running around inside it like an Indy racer. They met and played with several other dogs — great fun for them and nice for us because we met so many lovely, interesting people, all dog people like us. Bob and I were so impressed with the unspoken “dog owner’s etiquette.” We were always asked, “Can your dogs play?” which was helpful because some dogs – our Suki the Shih-Tzu for example – don’t play well with other dogs.
Hope you enjoy the beach shots. We PROMISE we’ll be back!
